EARLY ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT

In accordance with the Australian Society of Orthodontists, we recommend that children have their smile assessed by an orthodontist by the age of 7. It is at this age that their adult teeth have started to come through. By assessing the development and movement of their teeth at a young age, we are able to detect if your child is developing a malocclusion (incorrect bite) or if their teeth are growing out of line.

There are a number of ways early detection and treatment benefits the patient.

POSSIBLE BENEFITS OF ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT AT A YOUNG AGE:

  • Prevent future crowding
  • Improve the relationship between the arches
  • Reduce the chances of childhood sleep apnoea and snoring
  • Help to keep the smile healthy and strong
  • May help with chewing and speaking
  • Help with hygiene concerns
  • Ease habitual grinding

Early intervention is most appropriate for patients with quite serious problems. It can also be appropriate for children who are suffering from social issues.

TREATING YOUNG SMILES WITH GROWTH MODIFICATION

Some of our young patients who exhibit an uneven bite may benefit from growth modification. This kind of treatment is only possible when the bones are still developing and growing hence why early assessment is so important. There are a number of ways to treat a poor bite with growth modification. Contact our team for more information.

CHILDREN WITH ADULT TEETH

Depending on the assessment results and your orthodontist’s recommendations, the next age hurdle for braces placement may be around the 12 year old mark. This is because when a patient is around 12 and 13 they will likely no longer have any baby teeth left. This period is known as the tooth transition period.

Treatment for young patients with adult teeth may be carried out with the following braces options including:

Traditional and ceramic braces may also be appropriate for children who do not have their adult teeth yet depending on the nature of their condition.

ADULTS

For adults who simply want to straighten their smile, ceramic or metal braces may be the best solution. If you are looking for a more conspicuous option, incognito or Invisalign could be the most appropriate solution.

So, at what age can you have braces?

You are old enough for an assessment after the age of seven. From then on, you may be able to undergo an orthodontic treatment at any age depending on your unique condition.
