At what age should
my child see an orthodontist?
The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic check-up around age 7. At this stage, their back bite is established, allowing our Specialist Orthodontists to identify potential issues before they worsen.
Early assessments help us determine whether your child may benefit from early intervention orthodontics, such as braces for kids, clear aligners, or other growth-guiding treatments. By addressing orthodontic concerns early, we can reduce the time your child spends in braces as a teen - or even prevent the need for braces altogether!
Phase 1 orthodontic treatment for kids
Orthodontic treatment for children happens in two phases. Phase 1 treatment focuses on early intervention, guiding jaw growth and creating space for adult teeth to prevent future alignment issues. Phase 2 treatment, usually during the teen years, involves braces for kids or clear aligners to straighten teeth once all permanent teeth have emerged.
At Straight Smile Centre, we offer a range of Phase 1 treatment options, including palatal expanders, early braces for kids, and specialised clear aligners like Invisalign® First and Angel A6 mandibular advancement. These advanced solutions can sometimes combine Phase 1 and Phase 2 into a single treatment plan, reducing the need for extensive orthodontic work later on.
