After you complete your treatment and unveil your beautiful new smile, the most important part of your treatment is just beginning: retention. During retention, we ensure that your new smile stays put, helping you maintain your amazing results for years to come.
What are retainers?
Retainers are custom devices designed to keep your smile in alignment after treatment. We offer two types of retainers at the Straight Smile Centre: fixed retainers and removable retainers.
Removable retainers look a bit like Invisalign® clear aligners and fit over your top and bottom teeth. They are transparent so most people won’t notice when you wear them.
Fixed retainers are thin metal wires bonded to the back side of your teeth near the gumline. You don’t need to worry about losing this type of retainer, but you do need to pay extra attention to brushing around it.
Why are retainers important after treatment?
Your smile is always changing and a retainer will help you maintain a straighter smile throughout the natural shifts that occur as a result of growing, aging, stress, pregnancy, and other factors.
Consistently wearing a retainer as advised by your Specialist Orthodontist can help prevent the need for additional orthodontic treatments in the future.
The first few months after your orthodontic treatment, your Specialist Orthodontist may have you wear your removable retainer throughout the day. Eventually, you will just need to wear your retainer at night in order to keep your smile straight!
Dental Monitoring and lifetime retention
At the Straight Smile Centre, we use our state-of-the-art Dental Monitoring app to monitor teeth stability and track any post-treatment shifts. This allows us to quickly make changes to your retention plan and recommend changes, if needed.
